Student Welfare and Personal Development

Killarney Heights Public School has an active Learning and Support Team (LST). The team consists of Executive staff, Specialist teachers (Learning & Support Teacher, English as a Second Language Teachers, Reading Recovery Teacher) and the School Counsellor.
The LST meets weekly to discuss the needs of individual students referred to the team. Teaching staff refer students for academic, social, emotional or behavioural needs or concerns. An appropriate course of action is implemented and regularly reviewed.

Peer Support

This is a program where Year 6 students lead weekly activities with a group of students from Kindergarten to Year 5. Year 6 students undertake special leadership training to help them prepare for the role. They are supported by Year 5 co-leaders who support them in this activity. The aims of the program are to:

  • develop skills and responsibility in senior students
  • provide support to junior students through the development of trust in older students, and
  • develop and support the cohesiveness of the whole school.

Sessions focus on issues such as resililence which teaches the students to be positive, proactive and resourceful in dealing with life experiences.

These sessions develop relationships between students of different ages and encourage senior students to feel responsibility for the welfare of other students making the school a safer and happier place to be.

Buddies

At the beginning of the year each Kindergarten child is paired up with a Year 6 buddy. After meeting their buddies, students spend time each week getting to know each other and working on various skills. The Year 6 buddies are a friendly face in the playground who help the Kindergarten student settle in, teach playground rules and responsibilities and teach appropriate playground games.
